Santorini: what romantic dreams are made of!
Santorini is one of the most romantic destinations on earth. This mythical Aegean island will take your breath away with its multicolored cliffs and wild volcanic sculptures soaring above a sea-drowned caldera and sleek Cycladic lines… After all, before it was called Santorini, the island was known as Kallisti, meaning “the most beautiful one”. And it’s true that the marvelous palette of contrasting colors and the beautiful landscapes in that place always mesmerize all newly-weds and Santorini wedding photographers!
A little bit of history
The island was formed by an enormous, violent volcanic eruption in 1600 BC, and the subsequently collapsing caldera formed these sheer cliffs that are the most impressive background for stunning wedding photographs. It is this eruption that is believed to have inspired Plato’s telling of the legend of Atlantis! But… even the epic photos don’t quite prepare you for the wild beauty of Santorini. The island is so photogenic that I barely managed to put my camera down during my first visit here!
Beautiful pastels overlooking the Aegean
Having adorned a million postcards, Oia is the stunning location that draws millions of visitors to the island! The pastel buildings lining the cliffside of Oia are at their finest when bathed in the glow of sunset. If you’ve ever seen a postcard or Pinterest image of the island of Santorini, this is the place where it was probably taken. Blue-domed churches, cobbled streets draped with fuchsia bougainvillea, and stunning sea views complement perfectly the golden colors of the Greek sunlight; here you have all the makings of a great wedding photography experience in Greece.
The main town of Fira, the modern capital of Santorini, is a vibrant place with a stupendous landscape. Imerovigli, a charming village which lies to the north of Fira, can also offer beautiful, quiet and secluded places with great sea views for catchy pictures that will capture the essence of your special day.
Dark, volcanic-sand or pebble beaches
The multicolored beaches are simply the icing on the cake here! Which is the ultimate beach to be in Santorini? The soaring red lava cliffs and red sand of Akrotiri’s Red Beach is a unique sight.
Known locally as the Black Beach, due to the volcanic black sand, Perissa Beach is another great photo location. These beaches can become the absolute backdrop of impressive photos as the multicolored formations of rocks and sand form a breathtaking volcanic landscape, offering a Santorini wedding photographer the chance to get dramatic photographs.
Getting that breathtaking postcard shot
I think most wedding photographers will agree that there is one type of light that rules above all others… It’s soft, warm and flat-out magical – and it’s the light that you can enjoy during sunsets and sunrises. That’s why you are at the right place: Sunsets are at the essence of Santorini’s enduring myth!
*Extra tip: Everyone always talks about the sunsets in Santorini, but the sunrises are special too!
